FOY DAN VALENTINE 7/03/1923-1/07/2006 Born in Edgewood, Texas, Foy Valentine responded to the call to preach and was ordained at the age of seventeen. He was educated at Baylor University (B.A. 1944) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MDiv 1947 and ThD 1947). He was a member of one of the original Youth Revival teams sponsored by the Baptist Student Union of BGCT. His student pastorates were followed by service as BSU director of Rice University and pastor of First Baptist Church Gonzales, Texas. In 1953 he became the second Executive Director of the newly formed Christian Life Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. In 1960 he began his twenty seven years of leadership in the Christian Life Commission of The Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville, Tennessee. In 1987 he retired and moved back to Dallas where he continued writing and working in the cause of Christian Ethics.
A pioneer voice among Baptists in applying the principles of Christ in seeking racial justice, Foy Valentine also championed the cause of religious liberty, work and business integrity, family life, and citizenship. He was Chair of the Baptist World Alliance Commission of Religious Liberty and its Christian Ethics Commission. He was President of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. He served twenty five years on the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs. He founded and edited CHRISTIAN ETHICS TODAY. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas.
He is survived by Mary Louise, his wife of fifty eight years, and three daughters, Jean, Carol, and Susan. He had five grandchildren, Laura Krauss, John Berg, Trey, Will, and Catherine Brown. He is survived by his brother, James H. Valentine of San Antonio.

The Twenty-Third Psalm
1 Corinthians 15:51-58Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
o death, where is thy sting? 0 grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. |
